![]() ![]() I asked Derrick to read the first two poems for me. My friend Derrick Austin was sitting across from me. I liked the verbs and the motion and the panic in the second poem “Telemachus” more. I thought the opening poem, “Threshold,” was too broad and vague for an entry way into the book. I wanted to be floored from the first poem to the last, no room for blunders. ![]() When I first opened Night Sky With Exit Wounds I was worried the book wouldn’t measure up to its hype. Night Sky With Exit Wounds is a must read and re-read, a book that will be cherished. He stands at the feet of American poetry and unties the masters’ shoelaces. Ocean Vuong creates and poses alternate universes within these poems. Night Sky With Exit Wounds is terrifying, heartbreaking, surreal, and lyrical–I’m not quite sure how a poet can fit so much humanity into so few words. How do you pay homage to a poet who has lived through some of the experiences described in Night Sky With Exit Wounds? I want to thank Ocean Vuong for his strength, for all that he has overcome, for the beauty of his writing in the midst of such chaos. ‘Night Sky with Exit Wounds’ by Ocean Vuong ![]() ![]() There is reason to suppose that nothing quite like it will be tried again. ![]() ![]() "Pelikan's book marks not only the end of a dazzling scholarly effort but the end of an era as well. The modern period in the history of Christian doctrine, Pelikan demonstrates, may be defined as the time when doctrines that had been assumed more than debated for most of Christian history were themselves called into question: the idea of revelation, the uniqueness of Christ, the authority of Scripture, the expectation of life after death, even the very transcendence of God. Jaroslav Pelikan - The Christian Tradition A History of the Development of Doctrine, Vol. Jaroslav Pelikan begins this volume with the crisis of orthodoxy that confronted all Christian denominations by the beginning of the eighteenth century and continues through the twentieth century in its particular concerns with ecumenism. ![]() ![]() Alec is somewhat naive but he's also capable, Seregil is a talented Jack-of-(most)-trades but never comes across as an overpowered Swiss army knife. They feel realistic, but at the same time display room for growth through the story. The primary strength of the book lies in the characters, especially Alec and Seregil. However, I liked how the book organically depicts sexuality and gender roles (gay and bisexual characters are unremarkable, and women have regular access to combat and political roles), and I would definitely recommend the book for someone looking for some old-school fantasy derring-do. ![]() Ultimately, the book didn't come together for me-I didn't hate it, but I was distinctly unimpressed by the prose and I was thrown by pacing issues with the plot. When Seregil rescues Alec from a noble's dungeon, he takes the boy on as his apprentice, and the novel follows the two as they make their way to the Skalan city of Rhíminee where they become involved in political machinations against the queen. Due to its dark themes of decay and death, the story is considered a classic of Conan lore while also cited by Howard scholars as one of his best tales. It is set in the pseudo-historical Hyborian Age and concerns Conan entering a lost city whose degenerate inhabitants are entangled in a murderous blood feud. A novella, it was originally serialized in Weird Tales magazine from July to October 1936, the months after Howard's suicide.
